Please Stop Laughing at Me

Please Stop Laughing at Me-Jodee Blanco

As a person who was bullied in elementary school, I thought this book would somehow speak to/relate to me in some way. I expected a book that would tell of one woman's journey through all the bullying trials. After all, the title and subtitle seems to hint at that, but I was pretty disappointed that it lacked that element.
I also expected this book to address bullying in schools as it's a pretty serious matter, but it did not. I also expected Blanco to give some sort of insight or wisdom on how to cope with bullying, but she did not. I don't think many young people who are experiencing bullying will be able to connect with this book. What I wish would have been included was ways to overcome and grow from the experiences.

The One-Day Way

Chantel Hobb's is a personal trainer who has lost 200 pounds, written two books, been on TV and has a video series.

This book is a lot about diet and exercise. Chantel developed her own food and exercise plan, but I found it to be a lot like the other plans that you can find out there.

Chantel does impliment a lot of her faith into this program. Her emphasis is: Faith, Food and Fitness.

This book asks you to be willing to make a commitment. If you are not ready to change your life, then this book is not for you. If you are ready, this book will be an encouragement in your life.

This is Your Brain in Love

This is your brain in love- by Dr. Earl Henslin

This book is written by a professional and just covers some question and answers to some basic questions, personal and professional stories, and it covers some emotions and what different kinds of lovers are.

I just thought this book would be interesting. I'm not married, i'm not even in a relationship, but I thought it would be nice to know some things and to have as a reference.

A Conversation with God for Women

A Conversation with God- for Women by Marcia Ford

This book covers some questions that women might be seeking answers to and is in a kind of dialogue form, with answers from God from the Bible to those questions. Some of the topics include:

* existence and nature of God
* Jesus, Virgin birth of God's only Son
* authenticity of Scripture
* meaning in and unique challenges of a woman's life
* power and purpose of prayer
* importance, realities, and struggles of relationships
* coexistence of good and evil

This book wasn't a very easy read book. I question whether or not these are really questions that women have for God. I think mostly because I have so many more other questions and mine weren't really all in that list. I think this book could be helpful for a conversation starter or in a new christian's bible study/devotional.

Awakening

Awakening by Stovall Weems

I chose this book from Waterbrook Multnomah for this review, at www.waterbrookmultnomah.com/bloggingforbooks because the title and excerpt from the book intrigued me. I have found myself in this sort of rut in my spiritual relationship with God. I haven't felt very hungry for His word or felt any motivation to read His word even. I knew/know that something is not right. I deeply desire to be hungry for God.
In Weem's book, Awakening, Weem talks about stop hitting the spiritual snooze button. Which means, to stop putting off having a relationship with God. I am guilty of thinking to myself that i'll work on my relationship with God later, i'm too busy now, etc. This book will help you to stop going through the motions of a Christian life and deeply desire to know and love God.
This book also teaches you about surrendering and fasting and praying. All of which are pretty important in a christian lifestyle.
I would definitely recogmend this book to anyone who is perhaps like me and hitting the snooze button a lot and just not feeling motivated or sluggish in their faith.

Churched

Churched-by Matthew Paul Turner

This book is about a young mans journey in different church systems. Matthew started out as a Methodist but then changed to a fundamentalist baptist church. Matthew's story is witty and it's definitely hard to put this book down. Throughout the story Matthew starts to see how flawed the church really is, and wonders if there is a perfect church out there where people just simply love God, like he does. Matthew hasn't found one yet. I really enjoyed the honesty and insight that Matthew shared in his book and I definitely recommend this book to anyone. I grew up in many different church systems so I kind of understand what it's like. I now consider myself a baptist.

Left at the Alter

Left at the Alter by Kimberly Kennedy

This is a story by Kimberly on how to find hope and healing in the midst of rejection. Kimberly shares her own personal story of actually being left at the alter on her wedding day and explained the emotions she went through and the things she thought and felt. Any woman who has ever felt the pain of rejection on any level, not necessarily being left at the alter can totally relate. And that is the point of this book. We all feel rejected at one point in time. We cannot rely on people because people will disappoint you. You have to put your full trust and full faith in the only person that will not reject you and that is God. Kimberly also shares what she did in order to overcome that rejection that she felt. Though, it took a long time, she finally understands what God's plan was for that dark part of her life and is really passionate about sharing her story (a story that was used on talk shows basically mocking her) with other women to see that we can all relate. Sometimes you may feel like you are completely alone in your rejection and that no one can understand. But, really, almost everyone can. This book also has a section that was very interesting that had mens views of rejection. Men shared the process that goes through their mind when they break up with their girlfriends and that it is actually quite hard for them to do it.
This book has helped me a lot as i've struggled and still am struggling over rejection and loss of a boyfriend. I've learned some good tips on how to cope with it and how to give it over to God. A favorite quote from the book is "Man's rejection, God's protection," and I pray that over my life every day.

What are you Waiting For?

What are you Waiting For- by Dannah Gresh

In the book, "What are you waiting for?" Dannah Gresh goes through the Bible and uncovers God's thoughts about some deep issues, like sex. Dannah reveals that sex is designed by God and answers some questions that I think a lot of young women might have about sex and sexuality.
Dannah also talks about some more edgy topics such as: Pornography, masterbation, LGBT issues, a way to break free from sexual guilt, and a way to truly fulfill intimacy.

This book is mostly designed for young women who are seeking answers about why Sex is a big deal to God. Gresh does a really good job of explaining the reason why you should wait. This book is also great for women who just want someone to be real about these issues for them.

You Are More

You are More- Tenth Avenue North

There's a girl in the corner
With tear stains on her eyes
From the places she's wandered
And the shame she can't hide

She says, "How did I get here?
I'm not who I once was.
And I'm crippled by the fear
That I've fallen too far to love"

But don't you know who you are,
What's been done for you?
Yeah don't you know who you are?

You are more than the choices that you've made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You've been remade.

Well she tries to believe it
That she's been given new life
But she can't shake the feeling
That it's not true tonight

She knows all the answers
And she's rehearsed all the lines
And so she'll try to do better
But then she's too weak to try

But don't you know who you are?

You are more than the choices that you've made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,

You've been remade.

You are more than the choices that you've made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You've been remade.

'Cause this is not about what you've done,
But what's been done for you.
This is not about where you've been,
But where your brokenness brings you to

This is not about what you feel,
But what He felt to forgive you,
And what He felt to make you loved.

You are more than the choices that you've made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You've been remade.

You are more than the choices that you've made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You've been remade.

You've been remade
You've been remade.
You've been remade.
You've been remade.

Desiring God

Desiring God- by John Piper

I was super excited to be able to review this book when I saw that www.waterbrookmultnomah.com/bloggingforbooks had it listed! I absolutely love John Piper. I've read a few of his books and listened to many of his sermons via podcast, and have made it to the cities a few times to attend some of Piper's services at Bethleham Baptist. Anyway, previous to Desiring God, i've read Piper's condensed version "The Dangerous Duty of Delight." If I could just post that as my review that'd be great. It basically sums up Desiring God. In Desiring God, Piper really tries to get people to understand that God is most magnified in us when we are most satisfied in Him. We are called to be delighted, it is actually more than just being called, it's our duty according to Piper. Pursuing joy is actually glorifying God, and Piper really lays it out in his book on how to pursue joy in every aspect of your life. Piper also tells you to approach God with the hedonists abandon. Again, I really love how passionate and how in-depth Piper gets in his books. It definitely moves you and stirs something in your life. This is a book you won't want to put down and this is a book that will definitely shake you to your core if you allow it to.

In this book, Jan uses powerful character studies of ten women from the Bible, as well as modern-day stories from her work as a professional life coach. Bible teacher Jan Silvious helps women choose new stories instead of dumping, or wallowing in, their old lives.

The ten women that Jan uses from the Bible are: Naomi, Leah, Rahab, Deborah, Hannah, Anna, Jehosheba, Abigail, Naaman's servant girl, and Elizabeth round out the cast of characters who, with their own stories, help readers find new perspectives with amazing results.

This is a wonderful book for any woman in any stage of life. I really liked reading about Naomi and hearing the stories from Jan's work.

Soul Print

Soul Print- By Mark Batterson

I had the opportunity to meet Mark Batterson in his theater church in the D.C area last year when he had started a series on his book called Primal. I have a copy of that book and in Soul Print there is a chapter from Primal inside of it. I love how Mark writes. He is a very passionate writer as well as a passionate speaker. Soul Print was all about introducing yourself to who you really are and who God created you to be. With the world sending you mixed messages about how to view yourself, Mark realizes that what people really need to know right now are some Biblical truths. This book is labeled as a self-discovery book that puts God at the center rather than self.
This book is a very easy read and would be good for young readers as well as adults, I definitely recommend it.

The Shelter of God's Promises

The Shelter of God's Promises- By Sheila Walsh

This book includes an in-depth Bible Study plan and would be perfect for a small group (or a large group) of women.
In this book, Sheila searches Scripture for things God has promised us and goes into great detail about what those promises mean. This book contains ten solid promises from God on: Something to hold on to, Provision, Peace, Confidence, Love, Grace, Hope, Strength, Knowing there's something better, and Home. Sheila uses all sorts of tools in order to help us understand and make connections in her book. She uses a lot of personal stories and you can tell that she is very passionate to get these truths out to other women.
This book can be used as a Bible Study or a devotional or just something to read when you need to hear about one of God's truths. Definitely a good thing to read when you're having a bad or rough day.

Precious Moments

Precious Moments Storybook Bible

I received this book for free from Booksneeze. When I was little I always wanted a Precious Moments Bible. My family collected precious moments stuff but I never had the Bible before. I always told myself that whenever I have a child, that I would get them one. So when I saw that booksneeze had one to review, I jumped at that opportunity. The Precious Moments storybook Bible is very simple, as it ought to be for Children. It highlights some of the main stories from the Bible with big bold print and classic Precious Moments pictures. The stories are captivating enough for young children to be read to and the words are big enough and simple enough for young beginning readers to understand and read through. Overall, this is a very nice children Bible and I highly recommend it for any young child.
